The Cheapest HMI on the Market Could Be Your Most Expensive Decision
When a certified product does not match what is on the certificate, the risk falls on the operator.
In one case we have examined, the certified operating temperature on the actual IECEx certificate is materially narrower than the range advertised on the product page. The difference between a marketed claim of -40°C and a certified limit of -20°C is not a rounding error. It is the difference between a compliant installation and a non-compliant one.
The RAM fitted and documented in the certified technical file is commercial grade, rated to 0°C, not the industrial wide-temperature RAM rated to -40°C that the product claims to support.
Gas group coverage is a further consideration. A product certified to IIB is not suitable for environments requiring IIC compliance, regardless of what broader claims appear on the product page.
The IECEx public register is freely accessible. Before you specify, read the certificate.
Zone 1 and Zone 2: What the Classifications Actually Mean in Practice
The zone classification determines which protection concepts are permitted and which equipment can be legally and safely installed.
Zone 1 typically requires more stringent protection concepts such as flameproof (Ex d), intrinsic safety (Ex i), or encapsulation (Ex m). Zone 2 commonly uses increased safety (Ex e). Equipment certified for Zone 1 is suitable for Zone 2 installation. The reverse does not apply.
Deploying Zone 2 equipment in a Zone 1 area is both a compliance failure and a direct safety risk. Most industrial facilities contain both zone types, often within metres of each other. Getting the classification wrong at the specification stage has consequences that cannot be corrected by fitting a different cable gland.
Classification must be carried out by a competent body. It is the foundation on which every equipment selection decision is built.
HMi Elements manufactures certified products for both Zone 1 and Zone 2 environments, supported by ATEX, IECEx, UKEX, and North American approvals. If you have a question about area classification or product suitability, speak to our team.
